Medallion Rottweiler Club Annual Membership Meeting  CGC/TDI Testing

May 16, 2010

Members of the Medallion Rottweiler Club and the general public met at Herricks Lake Forest Preserve on this beautiful spring Sunday morning.  The club set up under the pavilion by the lake and certified tester, Mariellen Spiros, began testing at 10:00 am.   Purebred and part-bred dogs were tested to earn an AKC Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) certification.  The Therapy Dogs International (TDI) testing was also offered for those who plan to do therapy work with their dogs.

Twelve Rotteilers were registered to test along with 4 Goldens, 3 Labs, 1 Jack Russell Terrier, 1 English Setter, 1 German Shepherd, 1 Newfoundland, 1 Doberman, 1 Border Collie, 1 Boxer, and 8 mixed breed for a total of 34 dogs tested.  Only three failed to qualify; two Rottweilers who did not know the down stay command and the 6 month old Newfie with limited obedience training.  This was the largest response to this event that the club has enjoyed since we began offering it several years ago, due primarily to the advance publicity in the local paper, and training centers and on the website/internet lists.

Joan Klem, MRC Public Education Coordinator, thanked Mariellen and club members who worked the event for making it a success.  In addition to assisting many dog owners with earning their certificates, the event exposed the general public who were out enjoying the Preserve to numerous well behaved and social Rottweilers. Many families who strolled past stopped to ask questions about the testing and to meet and pet the Rottweilers.

Mariellen complimented the club on the hard work of its members during the four hours of testing.  She particularly wished to thank Howard Bernier for his assistance with the paperwork and to Joan Klem’s granddaughter, her young  friend and Michelle Burch’s daughter for providing the children distractions throughout the testing.  The club realized a small profit after paying the tester, renting the site, and paying for the advertisement in the Herald.

The annual membership meeting followed the completion of the testing.  Club membership totaled 282 with 20 new members to date in 2010.  The 2010-2011 Officers and Board of Directors slate was voted in, and James Jackson was appointed by the Board to fill the remaining year of  Director Ed Gegenheimer’s term.  The meeting agenda was completed and the meeting adjourned at 4:00 pm.  President Jackson provided a cake to celebrate the birthday of Joan Mazat, incoming Recording Secretary. The next meeting of the Board will be in conjunction with the “Popcorn Cluster” of shows in Valparaiso, Indiana, on Sunday, June 27th.    The meeting will be at the RV of Eleanor Jackson upon completion of the Rottweiler breed ring.
